“They made this…to honor him.” NECA’S New Robocop Figure!“Part man, part machine, all cop.” Having collected every incarnation of officer Alex Murphy over the years, from the poorly realized cap-firing Kenner offerings to the surprisingly well done (for their time) Toy Island giant figure (which actually had a removable brain, the computer hand spike AND a retractable holster compartment for the Auto-9 in the his right thigh just like in the film) I was more than a little curious to see how NECA would translate the character, in a similar position to that of the Terminator Endoskeleton, both of which had already received very well done figures from McFarlane Toys one can’t help but wonder…why bother? Why attempt to re-invent the wheel if there’s nothing new to contribute? I’ll be honest, my money ($15.99 at Toys R Us) was somewhat grudgingly relinquished as I couldn’t help but think that for all intents and purposes I already owned this figure. I’m happy to report that is not the case. As good as McFarlane’s Movie Maniacs Robocop was it was sculpted in an action pose and articulated after, leaving you basically with an action figure that looked good in one or two poses and awkward in all others. NECA went the smarter route of sculpting the figure in a neutral pose and leaving it up to you the collector to decide how best to pose him. One of the things I really appreciate is that all of Robo’s more iconic poses can be done with this figure. “Serve The Public Trust.” Get a good look at the figure before making your purchase, the visor seems to have been glued on a little higher than it should be (you can actually see his nose clearly which shouldn’t be the case). Other than a couple of those, the figures all seemed to be in pretty great shape at TRU. “Protect the Innocent.” Some of the newer collectors aren’t quite as used to glued joints (joints that bonded as the paint dried on the figure, making them very difficult to pose them until the joints have been loosened. One trick involves putting the figure under a hair dryer for about 30 seconds on the glued joint, then as soon as you can grab the figure again, move the joint back and forth until the paint dries. Uphold The Law… Is this THE Ultimate Robocop figure? Sadly no, that would take all the features I mentioned that the Jumbo version had, a few different heads and Peter Weller’s likeness for an unmasked version. However, it is the most articulated version of the character to date in this scale. Speaking of scale, hopefully NECA can make an in scale ED-209 and Robocop 2 for Murphy square off against. As for the details and paint they were pretty spot on. As though he just came off an Old Detroit assembly line for OCP. Hopefully this figure will sell well and maybe we’ll finally get a movie accurate unmasked version with Peter Weller’s likeness (After all, he DID do a video on Funny or Die to help out the campaign for a Robocop Statue in Detroit so it sounds like he’s at least open to discussion about the character again) but in the meantime with his viscious looking Data Spike alternate hand, Auto-9, and over 12 points of articulation that blend rather elegantly into the sculpt, this is truly one of the better versions of character I’ve seen in a long time. So the old saying is true “I’d buy THAT for a dollar!” heck, I bought one for Sixteen! “Your move creep.”
