MOTUC November Pt.1: Swiftwind and Snout Spout Arrive! The impressive collection of colorful characters in the Masters of the Universe Classic’s line from Mattel continues this month with Snout Spout, Swiftwind and (when she arrives) Bubble Power She-Ra or She-Ra 2.0 as she’s been dubbed by the fans. In part 1, we’ll focus on the figures that are included in the Club Eternia Subscription: Snout Spout and Swiftwind. Starting with the Heroic Water Blasting Firefighter himself… First, some peace of mind for the collectors who don’t open the white mailer boxes and are wondering where the Club Eternia Exclusive Faction Sticker Sheet is. Don’t panic, it’s in Snout Spout’s mailer box. The sticker sheet has all the factions that have been used in the line to date, including the newest one for the Galactic Defenders (more on them in Part 2!). Snout Spout is another terrific update on a classic Masters of the Universe figure by The Four Horsemen. His body, like the original is about as standard as MOTUC bucks get, not a bad thing necessarily but don’t expect the more techno-organic detailing found on his 200X Staction counterpart. This interpretation of Snout Spout is faithful to the original figure solely. I know there’s demand for the hyper detailing of the Mike Young Productions Era, but I have to hand it to the Horsemen and Mattel for sticking with updated vintage figures since 2008 so that the entire vintage line of characters will have a cohesive look. Besides, I think Bubble Power She-Ra heralds the beginning of something the hyper-detail camp can start getting excited about, more on that next time. Back to Snout Spout. Though he comes with his signature Battle Axe/Trunk Controller he doesn’t really that second part now. His trunk is now fully poseable (bendy technology) and it’s a welcome improvement on the original figure, a trade I’m happy to make for the ability to squirt water. Also, considering how cumbersome his head is, it has a surprisingly good range of motion particularly up and down motion which I wasn’t expecting giving him a lot of posing options. Like the original (Not “Just like the original” Webstor fanatics!), Snout Spout has his iconic back pack which includes the plug the original had to seal the figure once he’d been filled with water. Some people don’t care for these touches but I like the attention to detail and that you can’t look at that or the dial on Hurricane Hordak’s back without remembering how fun the original toy was, which in a way; is what this line is all about. Now my friends and fans of Swords, Sorcery and Barbarians: Let’s talk Rainbows and Unicorns! Right off the bat, I have to say considering the enormous wing span of the figure, the packaging job on Swiftwind is pretty amazing, allowing him to be displayed through the window box with the wing closest to the front intact. I like seeing that kind of consideration for non-openers amongst us. As you can see, The original She-Ra figure just doesn’t quite have the ability to mount Swift Wind properly. Yes, there are a lot of jokes to be made about that last sentence but I’m above that sort of thing. ;) Bubble Power She-Ra has corrected the issue and should be able to sit properly in the saddle. The problem with the original figure is the hard material her skirt is made of keeps her legs from being able to position correctly. Personally, since I don’t plan on selling any of my loose figures ever anyway, I took a box cutter and made about a 3/4 inch slit on each side of her skirt which solved the problem… Swiftwind was designed in a rather brilliant way where the hind legs and the tail can function like a tripod and balance the and the She-Ra riding him. This is really no small feet considering the colossal wings the figure has. it didn’t take much trial and error before I was able to do some really dynamic poses. Many collectors simply don’t want this figure because it’s too “girly” which I can understand. I didn’t have one as a kid (or any She-Ra toys for that matter) and definitely a Unicorn with Rainbow Wings which is always a tough sell for guys…especially ones into Barbarians and Sci-Fi Monsters. But I can honestly say looking at the vibrant and eclectic mix of characters in MOTUC already, he fits right in there. Much like an embarrassing little brother in Junior High, he’s a Rainbow Winged Unicorn, but he’s OUR Rainbow Winged Unicorn. Also a friend recently reminded me that with She-Ra at the reigns it’s very reminiscent of the Valkyrie and Pegasus from Mythology and that’s pretty cool to me. Aside from that, just looking at the sculpt, the articulation and the overall design I can’t help but think there are some customizers out there who are going to be a little sore they didn’t get this one if it sells out soon. Swiftwind and Bubble Power She-Ra are available as of this writing on mattycollector.com, Snout Spout is currently Sold Out. Next time, a review of Bubble Power She-Ra and some thoughts on Galactic Protectors, until then This Review-Or heading back into the dungeon…
